Calgary Poetry Slam Returns!

The Calgary International Spoken Word Festival presents:

Calgary Poetry Slam – Season Opener!

Thursday, October 26, 2006 – 8:00 pm
Beat Niq Jazz & Social Club – 811 1st St SW
Hosts: Sheri-D Wilson & Mark Hopkins

Last season, over 40 Calgary poets competed in the monthly Calgary Poetry Slam, wowing audiences with dynamic performances and heart-piercing words. At the Slam Finals in July, the 2006/07 Calgary Slam Team was chosen – and Wakefield Brewster, Jordan Dack, Kirk Ramdath and Sabo just returned from Toronto, where they competed with teams from Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Windsor and Winnipeg in the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word.

But now it’s autumn, a time of change, and we’re starting it all over again!

The Calgary Poetry Slam returns on October 26th with the same wild energy, dynamic hosts and focus on local poetry. With unmatched enthusiasm and sold-out audiences month after month, this poetry phenomenon is not to be missed!

10 Competitors Only!

If you want to Slam, arrive by 7:00 pm, bring a $5 registration fee and 3 poems (three-minute MAX, each) and sign up with Mark Hopkins. Sign-up will be first come, first served, so be sure to arrive early!

The winner receives a $50 cash prize! Selected winners from the monthly Slams will have a chance to compete in the 2007 CBC Poetry Face-Off and/or join the 2007/08 Calgary Slam Team to perform in national and international Slam competitions! Christian Bök is the author of Crystallography (1994), a pataphysical encyclopedia nominated for the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award, and Eunoia (2001), a bestselling work of experimental literature that won the Griffin Prize for Poetic Excellence. Bök has created artificial languages for two television shows, Gene Roddenberry’s Earth: Final Conflict and Peter Benchley’s Amazon, and has earned many accolades for his virtuoso performances of sound poetry. His conceptual artworks (which include books built out of Rubik’s cubes and Lego bricks) have appeared at the Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York City as part of the exhibit Poetry Plastique. Bök is currently a Professor of English at the University of Calgary.

Wakefield Performing in a musical capacity since age six and writing for the past 15 years, Wakefield has made his dynamic presence on the scene known with no uncertain terms. Writing in a political yet lyrical voice and performing with an audaciousness yet unseen, he has blasted onto over 300 spoken word stages across Toronto, Canada and the U.S. throughout the past 3 years and can be experienced regularly at Coffeehouse Features and Cabarets, The Art Bar Reading Series, Red Cabaret and other feature readings, poetry slams, sharing stages with bands and fundraisers.

Emily Carr is a new Onion. She moved to Canada about a month ago with her husband, one dog, one cat & too many boxes of books. She's currently working on a PhD in poetics at the U of C, and has published in literary magazines in the US & the UK, including The Exquisite Corpse, Third Coast & Fire. Emily is excited to be in Canada, & is learning to love Calgary, though she's still afraid of the weather & misses her tin-roof back porch & beautiful backyard.

MUSICIAN: The material on Danielle's brand new CD 'Shadows' has been described as "beautiful strangeness"- cruising through the ether, as well as the underworld, with artists such Tori Amos and Tom Waits. On 'Shadows' Danielle enlisted a group of "musical soulmates" to join her on this project including the maddest of madman guitartists Martin Tielli of the Rheostatics. She is pleased to join the Onions for a night of words and music!
