Eleventh Transmission is proud to announce our first fiction writing contest. We are seeking submissions from local, national, and international authors. Stories will be assessed based on quality of writing as well as originality. There is no required theme or topic and we eagerly anticipate a wide variety of submissions.

Submissions will be blind reviewed by our illustrious panel of judges, comprising Vivian Hansen, Chris Ewart, Mark Hopkins, and Karina Ramdath (see bios below).

Stories should be:
-Of excellent quality.
-Previously unpublished.
-Not longer than 3000 words.
-Not currently submitted elsewhere.

Prizes:

First Place: $200, $20 Pages Gift Certificate, and a Pages bag.
Second Place: $75 and a Pages bag.
Third Place: $50 and a Pages bag.

Stories finishing from First to Third in the contest will receive publication in Eleventh Transmission within 6 months following the close of the contest and notification of contest winners. Stories finishing outside the top three are still eligible for publication at the discretion of the authors of the story and the editors of Eleventh Transmission.

How to Enter:

Email your submission in MS Word (.doc, .rtf) or .txt format to contest@eleventhtransmission.org. Include author name, complete mailing address, and phone number on the first page only.

The entry fee for this contest is $10 CAD ($10 USD outside Canada). Payment is accepted via cheque or money order made out to "Eleventh Transmission".

The contest closes January 31, 2007. Cheques or money orders must be postmarked by this date to ensure consideration. Entries from outside Canada should send the entrance fee in US funds

Confirmation of contest entry will be sent via email once the entry fee has been received. Winners will be announced in the April issue of Eleventh Transmission. All prizes will be sent via surface mail within North America and via air mail elsewhere.

Judge Biographies:

Vivian Hansen is a Calgary poet and freelance writer. She has served as VP Publishing and Editor of Forum Magazine (a journal of the Calgary Women's Writing Project), and editor of FreeFall Magazine. She has been a judge for the Calgary Writers Association and contest coordinator. She has also judged for the Hamilton Region Arts Council. Her poetry has appeared in many Canadian journals, including Descant, Jones Av, and Room of One's Own. Her nonfiction has been published recently with Legacy Magazine and The Fieldstone Review. Her books include: Never Call it Bird - the Melodies of Aids, Angel Alley - the Victims of Jack the Ripper' and Leylines of My Flesh.

Chris Ewart recently completed an MA in English at the University of Calgary, where he teaches in the Faculty of Communication and Culture. He also teaches at the Alberta College of Art and Design and is a frequent contributor to the Calgary Herald's Books and the Arts section. He received the Kathleen and Russell Lane Canadian Writing Scholarship in 2004, and his play, Billy's Drums, is in development with Calgary's FireBelly Theatre for 2007. His first novel, Miss Lamp, is a local-bestseller and he is currently working on a collection of poems and a second novel, Sunny Day.

Mark Hopkins is a Calgary-based writer, arts administrator and journalist. He works with the Calgary International Spoken Word Festival, Calgary Young People's Theatre, filling Station Magazine, Spoken Word Canada, and Swallow a Bicycle Productions, and his writing appears regularly in Avenue, FFWD and Swerve.

Karina Ramdath incorporates poetry and short stories, including writing workshops, in her community development projects because she values heart-felt and thought-provoking written expression. Karina has taught writing as a professional tutor, edited publications for Mount Royal College, and has a wide array of writing interests including letters to government ministers and students' unions, poetry, and articles. Karina's published works include, "Eradicating Blindness: Canadian Organisation Making it Happen" on Eleventh Transmission and the co-creation of the World University Services of Canada Calgary newsletter.
