Open Call
eleventh.transmission is a space for Calgary's diverse artists and thinkers to showcase their craft. We welcome poetry, fiction, photo, and art submissions at all times. We also welcome article contributions, book/movie/music reviews, and commentaries/criticisms of media, war, environment, etc.
We are pleased to showcase emerging as well as established artists. The number of artists showcased per issue will be limited so that the artist's work is truly featured. Currently, material suitable for publication will be showcased within 1–3 months of submission. We will let you know the status within 2 weeks of receiving your work. Article submissions will be published the next issue. Please include a short biography with your work, and www if applicable. Send your work (and questions) to submissions@eleventhtransmission.org.
Comic Books
Deadline June 26, 2006 -coming up!
Eleventh Transmission is seeking comic book related submissions for the July 3 issue. All genres of text and images are welcome as long as they are related to comic books. Any length of submission is fine. Comic books are rarely considered high art in North America, and reading them is often considered a childhood activity. Fantasy and escapism are definitely aspects of the genre, but pigeonholing this art form is a denial of the many serious literary works it has produced that have challenged societal norms and provided valuable social commentary, in addition to being outstanding works of art. Share with us your defenses/criticisms of… The Comic Book as High Art.
Superheroes have values, but are we wary of Spiderman if he drapes himself in the U.S. flag? (or reveals his identity because the government wants superheroes to register as living weapons of mass destruction) Or is that a heavy burden to place on the Web slinger, when he has enough trouble paying his bills! The comic book can be high art, but it’s also FUN, even for two strangers in paradise. Please share your comic book story with us. Tell us about your favourite character and what he or Shi (or it) has done for you. Tell us about storylines that have shocked and awed you. Tell us about lesser known/independent titles that are worth reading. Share with us your drawings of original characters or fan art. Please submit by June 26, 2006. If you have questions regarding the form/content of your submission, please email (and send submissions to) submissions@eleventhtransmission.org.
Technology
Deadline July 28, 2006
Buy it, use it, break it, fix it,
Trash it, change it, mail- upgrade it,–“Technologic” - Daft Punk
By changing the world and changing our relation to it, technology alters not only what we create but our very selves. Whereas once epic poems were remembered and spoken aloud, now a seven digit phone number is too lengthy to recall – not when we have a cell phone to do it for us.Does technology bring us together? When you consider two strangers passing in the night, each talking on their cell phones (or new weapons technology), a case can be made for how technology is, literally, tearing us apart.
Then again, e.t. exists only in digital form. And you are reading this on an electronic forum. New technology and new methods of communication create the possibility of new strategies of struggle and resistance, and of new forms of art. Eleventh Transmission is seeking words and art related to the topic of Technology for the August 7 issue. Original poems, fiction, essays, visual, and audio art are welcome. Deadline for submission is July 28.

The Mandate/Request Part
Hi. I'm Kirk Ramdath. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do when I registered the domain www.eleventhtransmission.org, but serendipity has played it's part, and every issue seems to be getting better. eleventh.transmission now has a mandate. This is as follows:
Mandate
Eleventh Transmission is a Calgary arts, culture, media, activsm e-zine that exists for three purposes:
-To showcase local artists and thinkers, in all genres of the written word and visual art.
-To deconstruct the borders that delineate the genre distinctions and class divisions of poetry (and other forms of art). To bring T.S. Eliot into the street and Tupac into the classroom.
-To be socially aware and engaged.
This magazine is not intended to compete with anything already existing elements of the Calgary arts community, but rather to add to our wonderful city vibe. I have a special request for those of you who are reading this and agree with the above stated mandate. If you have a website, please add a link to http://www.eleventhtransmission.org. I will be happy to reciprocate. Just drop me a line to let me know (kirk@eleventhtransmission.org). It would be very nice to have the support of the portion of Calgary's artistic community that views this website. That is all. thankyou.
