AMPed UP

Alberta Magazines Get AMPed Up

The Alberta Magazine Publishers Association (AMPA) announces a stellar line-up for its AMPed Up reading taking place on Tuesday, April 24, at 7:30pm at Pages in Kensington.

As part of a new campaign to highlight the quality and diversity of the creative milieu in which Alberta Magazines thrive, AMPA’s new AMPed Up series will kick off with readings from Alberta-based writers Christopher Wiseman, Robert Majzels and Emily Carr.

The eclectic mix of literary styles and artists will showcase the energy and diversity of the arts and lit scene present in Alberta magazines.

Described as a “playful poet…brutally honest about the world and about himself,” Christopher Wiseman is the author of In John Updike’s Room, recent winner of the W.O. Mitchell City of Calgary Book Award and founder of the University of Calgary’s Creative Writing Department. He was the judge of Freefall magazine’s 2006 writing contest.

Robert Majzels, a current professor of creative writing at the University of Calgary and Governor General's Award winner for Translation, recently moved from Montreal to Calgary. He is the author of Apikoros Sleuth, a poetic exploration of the limits of language, and a philosophical inquiry into the terrain of ethics, issues of life, death, guilt and community which employs the form of the Jewish Talmud. He is the interim faculty advisor for dANDdelion magazine.

Of no relation to her famous namesake, Emily Carr is a PhD student at the U of C and a member of the editorial collectives of both dANDdelion and filling station magazines. Recently relocated to Calgary from North Carolina, Emily has been published internationally across the US and UK in magazines such as Third Coast, the Exquisite Corpse, and Fire. Her writing explores subjectivity, lyric and erasure poetics and she will be reading from her recent collection Sprawl.

Join AMPA for an incredible and diverse literary evening and experience. Entry is free, with a complimentary wine and cheese to follow. As well, representatives from Alberta’s arts and lit magazines will be present.

The action starts at 7:30pm sharp, April 24.

Pages on Kensington, 1135 Kensington Road N.W.
