Calgary International Spoken Word Festival: Line-Up and Schedule Announced

(Full festival schedule and artist bios available at 2006.calgaryspokenwordfestival.com/media or by request)

The 3rd annual Calgary International Spoken Word Festival takes place April 25-30, 2006. This year’s festival celebrates National Poetry Month with a focus on Canadian artists, presenting diverse performances by over 30 electrifying poets, storytellers and multidisciplinary artists from across the country. This youth-oriented, world-class festival brings the page to the stage with Hip Hop, Jazz and Dub Poetry, rejoicing in all forms of the Oral Tradition.

New additions to the festival include Queer Conscience, honouring Canada’s queer voices, and Bravo!FACT Video/Poems, a thrilling foray into electronic poetry. The festival teams up with Coach House & Snare Books for the Open Minds book launch/open mic and with MC/poet Wakefield Brewster for the Floetry Poetry Hip-Hop Workshop. Big Bang Poetry & Music, the audience favourite from last year’s festival, returns with a mind-blowing line-up that features George Bowering, Canada’s first Poet Laureate, and a poetry party that will last ‘til daybreak. Champagne & Jalapeños winds things down with a fiery finish that will leave you wanting more.

The 2006 CISWF happens in the heart of downtown: the Jack Singer Concert Hall Lobby and Motel in the EPCOR CENTRE; the Beat Niq Jazz & Social Club; the Auburn Saloon, Calgary’s official theatre bar; the Glenbow Museum, Western Canada’s largest historic archive; and the Art Gallery of Calgary, home to cutting-edge contemporary art.

From January to March, five poets in each locale, commissioned by CBC regional producers to reflect local voices and traditions, will face off before a live audience and deliver their words on this year's theme - 'Irresistible'. The Competitors

David Bateman is a highly-respected performance artist who has drawn accolades across North America; his debut book of poetry, Invisible Foreground, traces a journey through life fraught with tenderness and terror.

Xstine Cook is the Founder of CAOS and the International Festival of Animated Objects. She also Co-Founded Green Fools, through whom she created original performances for over 13 years using stilts, whips, fire, masks, puppets and poetry. Currently she makes short puppet films. Poetry is a long-standing unrequited passion, now coming to bloom. Xstine won the right to compete in this yaer’s Poetry Face-Off at the first monthly Calgary Poetry Slam. Her poem was chosen out of 16 competitors by judges Allan Boss, Kirk Miles and Ali Riley.

Michael Green is a co-founder and co-artistic director of One Yellow Rabbit, and a member of the permanent performing ensemble. His book of plays, Dreams of a Drunken Quaker – Two Plays and a Rant, was published by AB Press in 1992.

Stuart Ian McKay is a member of the Writers’ Guild of Alberta and the League of Canadian Poets. His first book, Stele of Several Ladies – a long poem, was published last year. Recently, he won CBC’s Alberta Anthology for the second time. Stuart plays well with others.

Angela Simmons’ writing career spans over thirty years. Poetry has remained her most consistent genre, although she works as a freelance writer, photographer, publisher and editor of YouthInkIT Magazine, a publication written by and for youth in Calgary. She facilitates journalism workshops with youth in schools throughout Alberta.

Chapbooks! DIY!

Look! Chapbooks!

I am teaching a chapbook workshop on March 18th at the Alexandra Writers' Centre:

Whoever said small press was small potatoes? Sure, a chapbook rarely nets you more than beer-and-nacho money when you sell a few after a reading, but chapbooks can serve as impressive calling cards, literary ephemera to trade for other books or chapbooks, and a valuable textual link between you and a potential reader.

Bring 1-5 poems or a short short story (postcard) and we’ll use paper, scissors, glue, string, staples, typewriters, stamps and paper cutters in assembly-line-production-style to produce chapbooks under the imprint Alexandrite Press in editions of 30. Lots of examples of chapbooks will be provided for inspiration, and you’ll leave with 20 copies of your own chapbook and 10 different chapbooks from each of the participants (based on a 10 person class size)- an instant collection! While we’re working, you’ll learn lots of handy small press skills as well as tidbits and tips about being part of the small press community.

It will be fun! So fun! Register today!

Love,
Jill
